Braces for Kids

When young children come for their regular checkups and dental cleanings we also monitor how their permanent teeth are coming in. In many cases, we can tell years in advance whether a child will need braces in the future. Here at New Heights Dental & Braces we offer a variety of alternatives and orthodontic treatment to our patients who need braces.

Who Needs Braces?

It is very common for kids to require braces to correct bite problems or straighten teeth that are coming in crooked. Some of the most common reasons for needing braces are:
•  Crooked teeth: if a tooth comes in at an angle that will disturb adjacent teeth.
•  Overbite: when the upper teeth protrude over the lower teeth and can lead to things like wearing of the enamel.
•  Underbite: the opposite of overbite and less frequent, happens when the upper teeth rest behind the lower teeth.
•  Open bite: happens when the upper and lower teeth don't touch.
•  Spacing: can be the result of missing teeth that leave gaps in the mouth.
•  Crowding: is, in general, when there is not enough room in the mouth for all the teeth, and some are out of alignment.
•  Impacted teeth: when a tooth is impacted, it cannot erupt because of overcrowding or when it's not positioned correctly.

Thumb sucking in infancy can be responsible for bite problems, which can also create issues speaking or chewing. In some cases, braces are needed along with jaw expansion to make room for all the permanent teeth.

We monitor a growing child closely during regular checkups, and we recommend starting orthodontic treatment as soon as possible to avoid further surgeries and other expensive procedures.

Types of Braces for Kids

Thanks to scientific advances and new technology, we can now offer several ways in which to use braces for kids. You don't just have to go with a mouth full of metal and wires anymore. There are new and exciting options available to our patients.
•  Metal braces: the most common type of braces because the treatments are effective, they cost less money, and most insurance companies will cover at least a portion of the treatment. Technology has improved metal braces to make them smaller, and teens can choose their favorite color to customize their look.
•  Ceramic braces: these types of braces are made of porcelain and are very popular with our adult patients, but are just as effective as metal braces. They can also be used in children.
•  Clear aligners: new technology such as Invisalign®, which we offer to our patients, is becoming a more popular option than metal or ceramic braces. The promise of a shorter treatment and the near-invisible aligners are extremely attractive to many patients.

Once we determine you need braces for your kids, we can schedule a consultation and will go over all the information you need to make the best choice for you then go over our financial options. Giving your child a beautiful smile for life is one of the best investments you will make.
