Dental veneers are a tooth-colored thin shell made of porcelain used to fix some cosmetic issues. Veneers are an ideal choice for patients who want to improve the look of their smile on a more permanent basis.
At New Heights Dental & Braces we are thrilled to offer this cosmetic procedure to our patients.
Who Is a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
Before moving ahead with the procedure, we will schedule a consultation in which we will review your oral health and determine whether you are a good candidate for veneers. Porcelain veneers are what we consider a permanent or long-term solution for any smile imperfections. Patients who can benefit from veneers are those who have:
These conditions can happen due to wear and tear as you age, but can also be caused by genetics or decay. Veneers have the reputation of being used by older people, but they are an excellent option for adults of all ages. Sometimes a patient that has a dental bonding decides to fix a tooth with veneers permanently.
During your consultation, we will explain in detail everything that is involved when placing veneers on your teeth. While we always try to maintain the structure of the tooth as much as possible, it is essential you understand that once we remove the enamel to prepare your tooth, we cannot reverse it to its original state. Also, we want our patients to be involved in how his or her new smile is shaped so that they are an integral part of this stage and we encourage them to be active by asking questions.
How Veneers Work
We use an off-site lab to make our veneers. In most cases, you will come in for a preparation appointment where your enamel will be readied for the placement of the veneers. Depending on the condition of your tooth and the wear and tear of the enamel, you may go home with a temporary protective cover. During this stage, you will also select the color and shape of your veneer, and we will make a mold to create the permanent replacement. This appointment can take over an hour.
During the Procedure
When you come back to have the veneer placed, we will first numb the area with a local anesthetic. Please let us know if you have fears of dental procedures and we can discuss the anesthesia options that are best to keep you comfortable. Our dentist will prepare the tooth and get it ready for the veneer. If we are using porcelain veneers, we will apply the resin, reshape it and harden the material using a laser. When that step is complete, we polish the tooth and do additional reshaping to match the veneer to your natural tooth's shape. When using porcelain veneers, our dentist will place the mold made by the lab.
It is essential that you understand veneers cannot be repaired and we will advise you of the cost involved in replacing a veneer. With proper oral health and regular checkups, your veneers should last you many, many years before they need replacement.
